Main system features
The Brescia underground is a light rail system conveying to a medium size city environment as that of Brescia (about 200,000 inhabitants) all of the benefits of an innovative, modern and fast transportation system, which traditionally are the prerogative of classic city undergrounds, used by big cities. The small size and totally automated carriages (i.e. without a driver on board), are electrically powered and travel along their own tracks and along an entirely protected path: part in a tunnel, part flush and part in a viaduct, without being hindered by road traffic. Systems of this type, established since the '80s, are featured by their small size and very high travelling frequency allowed both by the integral automatism and the rail being in its own track. In this way, the traditional "time scheduled" operation is replaced by an innovative "frequency" operation. Far superior performance to that of traditional surface means is thus obtained, in terms of regularity and frequency of service, people carried and commercial speed, all for the advantage of the service level to passengers.
