A new permanent artwork is joining SUBBRIXIA: ‘Physical Culture: Metro Edition’ by Augustas Serapinas is coming to Volta station
This new installation marks the continuation of SUBBRIXIA, the contemporary art project which, since 2015, has been bringing site-specific works to Brescia’s underground stations, transforming them from mere transit points into places of culture, encounter and discovery.
For Volta station, Serapinas has created a new iteration of Physical Culture, the series of installations launched in 2012 and presented at major international venues. The work features fully functional fitness machines, in which the traditional weights have been replaced by replicas of classical sculptures, cast in aluminium for the first time for this occasion.
An unexpected encounter between two seemingly distant worlds, through which the artist draws a parallel between artistic training and physical exercise: two experiences united by exertion, repetition, practice and constant commitment.
The work also stems from Serapinas’s personal experience and his years of training at the Vilnius National Art School, where drawing and sculpture were taught through copying nature and models from the classical tradition.
With Physical Culture: Metro Edition, the artistic landscape of the Brescia underground is thus expanded, joining works such as Brixia by Marcello Maloberti at Stazione FS, Gothic Minerva by Patrick Tuttofuoco at San Faustino, Mind the Gap by Nathalie Du Pasquier at Vittoria and BrixiaDue by Andreas Angelidakis at Bresciadue.
